Do you know ? The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), the main trading platform of the New York Stock Exchange, is the world's largest stock exchange. In 2007, it was one of the few major equity markets not to be entirely electronic and to keep quotations by outcry.

Stock trading takes place at 11 Wall Street. Trading on the NYSE takes place Monday through Friday between 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. (local time).

On October 27, 1997, following a drop of 554.26 points in the Dow Jones index, trade officials called for the first time the "circuit breaker" to stop trading. Now, as soon as the index falls by 10%, 20%, or even 30%, the stock market then closes temporarily. This closure can last for an hour and in some cases trading is closed for the rest of the day.

On December 6, 2005, the office of the New York Stock Exchange approved the merger with Archipelago, the NYSE losing its status as a non-profit corporation and becoming a public limited company, the NYSE Group.

On June 1, 2006, the NYSE Group and Euronext merged to form NYSE-Euronext. Marsh Carter is the president of the New York Stock Exchange, succeeding John S. Reed. John Thain is the chairman of the NYSE Group and Gerald Putnam and Catherine Kinney are the co-chairmen.
